Ek Thi Daayan Observations/Review

From the promos, it felt that Ek Thi Daayan sure had the potential and in some ways does live up to the expectations of the hype that it created but some illogical/unexplained scenes in the film kept be away from completely liking it.
Konkana Sen Sharma is absolutely magnificent and acts so well that you tend to believe that she is actually a witch. Huma Qureshi is good while Kalki Koechlin is average and has a small role.
The second half of the film looks hurried. Some of the scenes, if elaborated and explained, could have saved the film.
The background score of the film is yet another highlight of the film. It adds so much to the drama
Emraan Hashmi is good. He is at ease with horror films like Raaz 3 and now Ek Thi Daayan.
Writers Vishal Bhardwaj, Mukul Sharma and Kannan Iyer have chosen such an interesting concept that appeal to the sensibilities of Indian audience. After all, most of us have grown up on stories of witches.
Kannan Iyer’s direction is impressive. He succeeds in keeping the viewers engrossed.
The film has typical Vishal Bharadwaj style of music with Gulzar’s lyrics and they are magical yet niche in appeal.
Ek Thi Daayan is entertaining but by the time you reach the climax, you feel something is missing. The chills and the thrills that you feel in the beginning, you no longer feel in the climax.
The opening of Ek Thi Daayan is low. The producers may make a decent profit as they have recovered most of the cost from non theatrical revenue stream. The producers have also presold overseas and many Indian territorial rights while still retaining the distribution rights of Bombay and East Punjab circuits with them. It is said that the producers have already recovered around 25 crores.
