Her first break as the lead heroine was in 1976 in K Balachander’s Moondru Mudichu, where she starred opposite the then rising superstars Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan. She followed her success up with a series of films with both Rajini and Kamal.
Sri marked her Bollywood debut with Solva Sawan in 1979. It was her second film Himmatwala (1983) with Jeetendra that became a huge success and established the Thunder Thighs Sri-baby, as she was soon nicknamed. The songs and trademark Southern style dances in the film became a rage, as did her pairing with Jeetendra. The duo went on to star in several hits including Tohfa, Mawaali and Justice Chowdhry. These films brought her commercial success.
In 1983 came Sadma a film that got the actor critical acclaim and remains one of the most celebrated performance of her career. Her portrayal of a young girl suffering from amnesia won her the first Filmfare nomination in the Best Actress category. She ruled the 80’s and reached a position where scripts were being written with her as the central character. From fantasy films like Nagina, that went on to become the biggest hit of 1986 to sci-fi film Shekhar Kapur’s 1987 super-success Mr. India Sridevi consolidated her position as the Numero Uno heroine in the country. But it was her performances in films like Chaalbaaz and Chandni in 1989 that catapulted the actor to unparalleled stardom, followed by Lamhe (1991). She even ventured in to the small screen with Malini Iyer (1994-95).
Sridevi married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996 and has two daughters Jhanvi and Khushi with him. She has certainly stolen the hearts of millions of Indians in her heyday. Chandni seems to have reversed the biological clock and age is just a number for this timeless beauty, who looks slimmer, sexier and younger with each passing birthday and can give any actor in B-town a run for their money, for anyone who has watched Sri’s histrionics in her comeback film English Vinglish will agree what a fine actor Sri is!
