The much hyped music album of Yo Yo Honey Singh has finally hit the stores, generating waves among his crazy fans. This particular album has been making headlines due to the Dabangg gal Sonakshi Sinha’s association with it. While the single Desi Kalakaar featuring Yo Yo Honey Singh, Sonakshi Sinha and Gulshan Grover has been trending online ever since its video was released, we were curious to know what the stylish Punjabi rapper had in store with the rest of the album. Stardom
The album starts off with the typical bass, techno number which you have heard from Yo Yo umpteen times before. Singers Lil Golu and Mansheel Gujral have ably supported the rapper in the vocal department, but the song has nothing new to offer in terms of music as the it gets monotonous in a matter of seconds. What’s interesting though are the vicious lyrics from Honey Singh and Lil Golu. The song seems to be Yo Yo’s reply to all haters who have criticised the rapper time and again, as the Blue Eyes singer spews venom, telling his life story in his unique style. The rapper has admitted Eminem to be his inspiration and after listening to Stardom one gets a feel that Yo Yo has tried to pull off a Lose Yourself by Eminem.
Love Dose
The next track is a peppy romantic number with fun lyrics from Yo Yo and Lil Golu. The song has some unusual musical arrangements and a cool R & B feel to it. Singh’s fun take on the old classicChand sa roshan chehra along with the lines he spouts to his girlfriends dad adds lot of flavour to the song. But what stands out in this Punjabi number is Honey Singh’s interesting rapping style. When compared to stardom, this track is much better and we move on with the hope that album livens up with the remaining songs.
One Thousand Miles
Honey Singh takes you on a romantic road trip with One Thousand Miles and you can’t help smiling as Singh seems to be slowly but steadily finding his rhythm as the album progresses. The song starts off with soothing guitar riffs supporting the calm and cool voice of Yo Yo pouring his heart out with engaging lyrics. But what is really interesting about the song is the way Isse Kehte Hain Hip Hop singer shifts gears from slow romantic number to a party anthem as beats build up steadily to his typical rap bout and again end with the wonderful guitar piece. The song achieves its objective of sticking to listeners mind long after the song has ended.
The title track Desi Kalakaar manages to impress us with its cool vibe and the unique vocals of Singh as he vouches for his love played by Sonakshi Sinha. This song is already turning out to be quite a hit with the fans going gaga over the nearly 10 minute long story style music video. As a song, Desi Kalakaar has a hint of reggae, combined with easy free flowing music and some outrageously catchy rap from the singer, who seems to be in his element with this romantic track. You tend to feel that the rapper is dishing out similar kinda of songs as this is the third consecutive romantic number in the album, without much difference in the theme.
Turn up the volume in your speakers as Singh has arrived with a party number with I’m Your DJ Tonight. The song is heavy on bass and drums, but it seldom makes you wanna groove on the dance floor. As usual it is Aata Majhi Satakli singer’s playful lyrics and catchy rap style which comes to the rescue as the song fails to hit the mark of a popular party track. If only the rhythm was intriguing enough to go with the energy levels of Honey Singh’s vocals.
This song is nothing like any Honey Singh song that you have heard before. The rapper dishes out a very moody song, with a hint of drunkenness in his voice, as the vocals tend to slur at times. The song is slow and short but fails to make an impact as the lyrics, unlike his previous songs in the album, are weak. Chal Mere Ghar may not be Yo Yo’s best work, but you have to pat his back for trying out something new with his strikingly distinct vocals.
The album ends with a cool techno number with beats that are easy on the ears and some really hep rap rendition from the Lungi Dance singer. The lyrics are youth oriented and Singh’s voice lends a lazy yet cool feel to the song. The music and the beats are the same throughout the song, as the track once again heavily relies on Honey Singh’s unmatched rapping style and his pleasing vocals. But alas! The song lacks re-listening value and one would soon forget it after briefly enjoying Yo Yo in his element.
Verdict:
Yo Yo Honey Singh‘s new album, Desi Kalakaar, has a bout of freshness here and there and a few songs tend to stay on your mind. Overall, the album is good and is pleasing to the ears, but on the long run, Yo Yo fails to create a long lasting impact. While it is beyond doubt that Blue Eyes singer is a talent to reckon with when it comes to rapping and crooning, but it’s the music which lets you down as each track sounds vaguely similar to its predecessor.
