Rajkummar Rao Says Other People’s Sexual Orientation Should Be Nobody’s Concern

Considering that cinema has a wide audience, it can be used to send progressive messages across the various sections of our society. Hence, when a movie deals with issues of the LGBTQ+ community, the makers need to be sensitive and thoroughly educate themselves on the subject. If people from the LGBTQ+ community are shown as a laughing stock (like how Mona Darling was represented in Hindi Cinema for years), it will influence society’s mentality negatively because it is well capable of doing so.

Rajkummar Rao, who will be seen in the film ‘Badhaai Do’ opened up about the subject of the film, a gay man and a lesbian woman entering into a marriage of convenience, and how the sexual orientation of a person is nobody’s business.

ETimes quoted him saying:

“The whole point (of the film) is to normalise everything. I have known so many people who are from the queer community. What they do inside their bedrooms is not our concern. The sexual orientation should be nobody’s concern. It is a very personal thing.”

When we talk about Hindi Films, there have been very few full-blown Bollywood style films on LGBTQ+ people and couples. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan was probably the first-ever Bollywood film that showed a same-sex couple’s romance DDLJ style. Rajkummar Rao highlighted the importance of representation and inclusivity in cinema.

“I hope there is a more honest representation and inclusiveness in cinema in future.”

He further went on to add that a large part of our society is unable to accept people who do not identify themselves as cis-gender and heterosexual.

“The acceptance is there but a big section of society is not being able to accept somebody being gay or queer. We want to normalize the whole taboo behind being gay.”

We hope that the Hindi film industry is able to tell us more well thought out love stories about LGBTQ+ people.
