The first thing that comes to your mind when you hear about Rensil D’Silva’s Ungli is prolonged delay. After crossing lot of hurdles and facing lot of hiccups, the film is finally gearing for release on November 28, 2014. With just days ahead of it’s release, the makers of Emraan Hashmi-Kangana Ranaut-Sanjay Dutt starrer Ungli have unveiled the music of the film. While Shraddha Kapoor’s hot number with Emraan Hashmi, Dance Basanti, made head turn with its funky tune, lets hear out the rest of the album and see what’s in store for music lovers.
The album opens with the foot tapping club number Dance Basanti picturised on Emraan and Shraddha. The song starts off with a unique flute piece followed by uplifting Punjabi beats before Vishal Dadlani’s edgy vocals lend energy to the funky song. Amitabh Bhattacharya pens some fun quirky lyrics to go with the flow of the dance number, but one can’t help but feel that the lyricists has tried a little too hard as the lyrics are odd at few places. Sachin-Jigar have composed a good club number with a nice Punjabi touch to it. Though enjoyable to hear, the song lacks repeat value.
The next in the album is the refreshing romantic number which puts a bright smile on your face. Sung and composed by Gulraj Singh, Pakeezah manages to stir your heart songs thanks to fresh voice of Gulraj, Caribbean style music with soothing guitar riffs and romantic lyrics by Manoj Yadav. The song is picturised on Randeep Hooda and Kangana Ranaut, showcasing their crackling chemistry. There is nothing odd about the song unlike Dance Basanti, infact Pakeezah is one of the most underrated romantic tracks of the year.
Following the romantic number, Auliya is a sad spiritual song composed by Salim-Sulaiman and sung beautifully by Armaan Malik. The song starts off with some engaging guitar riffs followed by soothing voice of Armaan Malik. The lyrics by Kumaar is apt for the song. One feels that Bollywood is plagued with too many semi sufi numbers right now and though this song sounds good, it has nothing great to stand out from the sea of spiritual tracks in B-town.
After Dance Basanti, the album gives you an another club number to show off your dance moves through the song Ungli Pe Nachale. The title track sung by Dev Negi and Shipra Goyal has Punjabi elements in it which adds zing to the funky music composition of Aslam Keyi. The beats are extremely catchy and would make you want to groove on the dance floor. The lines sung by Shipra Goyal are quirky thanks to fun lyrics penned by Kumaar. Though the song is not praiseworthy, it has enough elements in it to be one of the party favourites this new year’s eve.
‘Respected Adarnia Ungli’…That’s how this funky rock number goes with an interesting fusion of shudh Hindi lyrics with heavy electric guitar riffs and techno beats. This youthful number has a rebellious feel to it as Vishal Dadlani and Neeti Mohan croon with panache for this high octane, energetic number. Though the song has enough spunk to become next youth anthem, it lacks on the novelty factor which is required in every chart buster.
Verdict: Except for Auliya, all the other songs manage to rustle up some interest in the listeners. The songs are all decent when considered as singles but collectively lack the punch to create a rocking album. Also, there doesn’t seem to be much variety in the offing in terms of music. Ungli soundtrack is fun, but doesn’t rise above the regular pitfalls of Bollywood music to turn into a great album.
